How to Handle a Hit-and-Run Collision
No one likes getting into car accidents. The initial shock of crashing into another vehicle can be a traumatic experience, and that trauma is compounded when the other driver decides to flee the scene, leaving you to deal with the damages.
Although this can be extremely stressful, it is important that you remain calm and not let emotions cloud your judgement.
As with any auto accident, your initial response should be to check for injuries. Then, if you are able, move your vehicle safely away from the flow of traffic. Under no circumstances should you ever attempt to chase after a driver who flees the scene of an accident. This could lead to additional accidents and dangers. Instead, call the police immediately and inform them of what happened.
As soon as possible, record the details of the incident and a description of the other vehicle to the best of your knowledge. Include things like:
- Time and location
- Direction of travel
- About how fast each car was going
- And anything else you feel may be relevant to the situation
You should also attempt to make contact with any potential witnesses who may have seen the incident. Take down their names and contact information, and ask if they would be able to wait with you for the police to arrive.
Be sure to call the police as soon as you have recorded all important information and spoken to witnesses. When the police arrive, be prepared to give a clear statement regarding what happened. If any witnesses agreed to wait with you, their account will help confirm your story.
As soon as possible, you should notify your insurer of the incident and provide as much detail as you can. You can make a claim under your personal coverage, including uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. If the driver is later identified, you can make a claim under their liability coverage.
